When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d,
and the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night,
I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.
Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
and thought of him I love.
Quando i lillà fiorivano, l’ultima volta, nel prato davanti alla casa,
e il grande astro nel cielo d’occidente calava presto la sera,
io ero in lutto, e sempre lo sarò, ogni volta che torni primavera.
Primavera che sempre ritorni, sempre mi porterai questa triade,
i lillà perennemente in fiore, l’astro che tramonta ad occidente,
ed il pensiero di colui che amo.
