He swears every now and then to begin a better life.
But when night comes with its own counsel,
its own compromises and prospects–
when night comes with its own power
of a body that needs and demands,
he returns, lost, to the same fatal pleasure.
Ogni tanto lui giura
di cominciare una vita migliore.
Ma quando riviene la notte a tentarlo
con le promesse e le sue lusinghe,
ma quando viene la notte che domina
la carne, a quei piaceri consueti
del corpo che desidera, che vuole,
perdutamente ancora s’abbandona.
