I held a Jewel in my fingers –
and went to sleep –
the day was warm, and winds were prosy –
I said “Twill keep” –
I woke – and chid my honest fingers,
the Gem was gone –
and now, an Amethyst remembrance
Is all I own –
Fra le mie dita tenevo un gioiello –
e mi addormentai –
il giorno era tiepido, i venti monotoni –
mi dissi: “Durerà” –
Mi svegliai – e sgridai le mie dita innocenti,
la gemma era sparita –
e ora, solo una memoria di ametista
a me rimane –
