The noise of cabarets, the sidewalk’s mire
sycamores shedding leaves in the black air;
the omnibus, ill-hung on four wheels, rattles
and creaks, a storm of mud and old scrap-metal,
rolling its red and green eyes as it goes;
workmen, bound for a meeting, under the nose
of the cops, are puffing on their short clay pipes;
roofs drip, walls sweat, the broken asphalt creeps,
in heaps along the gutter sewage lies:
that is my route – at the end is paradise.
Il chiasso dei cabaret, la melma sul marciapiede,
i platani decaduti che si spogliano nell’aria nera,
l’Omnibus, uragano di ferraglia e di fango,
che cigola, malfermo sulle sue quattro ruote,
e ruota i suoi occhi verdi e rossi lentamente,
gli operai che vanno al circolo fumando
la pipa in faccia ai poliziotti,
tetti che colano, muri madidi, il pavé scivoloso,
l’asfalto sfondato, rivoli che riempiono le fogne,
è la mia strada – col Paradiso in fondo.
