How many kisses satisfy,
you ask; how many overwhelm?
As if you’d make reckoning
of the grains of Libyan desert sand
in Cyrene, where the sylphium grows,
between the oracle
of sweltering Jove and the sacred tomb
of old Battus – or catalogue
the stars that watch our stolen love
these quiet nights. Only
infinite kissing satisfies
(and more) your mad Catullus – kisses
beyond the range of an evil eye
or a wicked tongue’s bewitching.

Mi chiedi, Lesbia, quanti tuoi baci
bastino per saziare la mia voglia di te.
Quanti sono i granelli di sabbia africana
che è sparsa in Cirene ricca di silfio,
tra l’oracolo torrido di Giove
e il sacro sepolcro dell’antico Batto;
o quante stelle nella notte silente
spiano gli amori furtivi degli uomini:
questo è il numero di baci
che vuole Catullo, pazzo di te.
Che i curiosi non possono contarli
né una lingua maligna maledirli.
