Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?
The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green.
L’amore è simile alla rosa di macchia,
l’amicizia assomiglia all’agrifoglio:
l’agrifoglio è scuro quando la rosa fiorisce,
ma chi è più costante nella fioritura?
La rosa di macchia è odorosa in primavera,
i suoi fiori estivi profumano l’aria;
ma aspetta che torni l’inverno:
chi si ricorderà della rosa di macchia?
Disprezza allora l’inutile corona di rose
e ricopriti della lucentezza dell’agrifoglio
che – quando dicembre rattrista la tua fronte –
ancora sa mantener verde la tua ghirlanda.
