I like dark nooks
of asleep inns,
where people culminate in a profusion of singing,
I like things that are cursed and light,
and the deep wine glasses,
where mind rejoices,
as enchanted thought.
Too foolish is to cry over a lost love,
painful and detached:
it’s better the tangy cloud of harmless wine,
it’s better a drunk genius,
and yet it’s better
a deaf inquiry about the flow of our lives.
I love the inns
which speak the subtle language of Bacchus;
and also, in the inns,
there is the name of Charles
written with golden letters.
(Transl. by D. Foglia)
A me piacciono gli anfratti bui
malvissuto e scostante,
meglio l’acre vapore del vino
indenne,
meglio l’ubriacatura del genio,
meglio sì meglio
l’indagine sorda delle scorrevolezze di vite;
io amo le osterie
che parlano il linguaggio sottile della lingua di Bacco,
e poi nelle osterie
ci sta il nome di Charles
scritto a caratteri d’oro.
