I know nothing about you: name, surname,
eyes, smile, words and gestures;
and I don’t want to know, so I didn’t
even ask about your hair color.
You live silently: this I know. You deeply love my rhymes:
so you become a sister in my sad dream,
O friend with no name and face.
Away from my regretful dream
perhaps we’ll never meet,
perhaps I won’t see you, you won’t see me.
But the friend we will never see is dearer
than the one who’s beside us.
The greatest good never comes!
(Transl. by D. Foglia)
Tutto ignoro di te: nome, cognome,
l’occhio, il sorriso, la parola, il gesto;
e sapere non voglio, e non ho chiesto
il colore nemmen delle tue chiome.
Ma so che vivi nel silenzio; come
care ti sono le mie rime: questo
ti fa sorella nel mio sogno mesto,
o amica senza volto e senza nome.
