I do not want to whimper over life, as many have done, and wise men too, nor am I sorry I have lived, since my way of life has not led me to think I was born in vain, and I depart from life not as from a house, but as from an inn. For Nature has given us a hostelry to stay at, not to dwell in forever.
A me non piace il male della vita, come hanno fatto spesso tanti e anche dotti, non mi pento di aver vissuto, dal momento che l’ho fatto in guisa da non dover credere d’esser nato per nulla, ed esco dalla vita come da un ostello, non come dalla mia casa. La natura ci ha dato la vita come un luogo nel quale dimorare, non come qualcosa da possedere.
