It slept in you like a dry fibroma, like a thin tapeworm, a dream,
now it crushes the gravel, now it shakes its own shadow; now it screeches,
swallows, urinates, having always waited for the taste
of camomile, the rabbit’s temperature, the noise of the hail,
the shape of the roof, the color of straw:
without remedy time
turns back on its days: the earth offers confused images;
will it know how to recognize the goat, farmer, cannon?
Not these forceps it truly hoped, not this pear,
when it trembled in your sack of opaque membranes.
(Transl. by Lawrence R. Smith)
In te dormiva come un fibroma asciutto, come una magra tenia, un sogno;
