The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me,
And I cannot, cannot go.
The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow;
The storm is fast descending,
And yet I cannot go.
Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me;
I will not, cannot go.
La notte si addensa attorno a me
selvaggio e gelido soffia il vento
ma una magia implacabile mi ha vinto
e non posso non posso fuggire.
Alberi giganteschi piegano i rami spogli
gravi di neve
veloce la tempesta si fa vicina
pure non posso fuggire.
Nuvole e nuvole su di me
deserti e deserti ai miei piedi
nessun terrore potrà allontanarmi
non voglio non posso fuggire.
