It rained all night
on summer’s
memories.
In the dark we left
inside
a mournful
thundering
of stones, standing
on the banks we lifted
torches
to explore
bridges,
their danger.
Pale at dawn
we saw
swallows
on the lines
soaked,
still
spying secret
farewell
nods –
& ground-level
mirrored
in streams
their faces
ravaged.
(Transl. by Lawrence Venuti)
Piovve tutta la notte
sulle memorie dell’estate.
Al buio uscimmo
entro un tuonare lugubre di pietre,
fermi sull’argine reggemmo lanterne
a esplorare il pericolo dei ponti.
All’alba pallidi vedemmo le rondini
sui fili fradice immote
spiare cenni arcani di partenza
e le specchiavano sulla terra
le fontane dai volti disfatti.
