Because I…because I, who live alone in the night,
I too, in the night striking a match
against the wall, I cautiously light a white candle,
inside my mind-
I set timid sails in darkness
And as my pen’s nib
scratches and creaks, I too write
and rewrite in silence and
for a long time about the tears
that wet my mind…
(Transl. by Joe Aiello)
Perch’io… Perch’io, che nella notte abito solo,
anch’io di notte, strusciando un cerino,
sul muro, accendo cauto una candela
bianca nella mia mente – apro una vela
timida nella tenebra, e il pennino
strusciando che mi scricchiola, anch’io scrivo
e riscrivo in silenzio e a lungo il pianto
che mi bagna la mente…
