I am, of Death, a close relation,
I love a love that had lost its way,
I love to kiss and kiss the one
who goes away.
I have much love for sickly roses,
the wilting women who long and wish,
the ray-filled, the sad and sorry times
so autumnish.
I love all the ghostly, beckoning
cheerless hours, can hear their call,
they mock the Big, the Holy Death,
I love them all.
I love the ones who travel away,
wakers, weepers who cannot refrain,
and on a cold and hoary morn,
meadows in rain.
I love a tired resignation,
peace, crying when tears just won’t begin,
which poets, the sick, the wise use
to shelter in.
I love the lovelorn, disappointed,
the crippled ones, those, who stop and stall,
those, who lack faith, the gloomy ones,
I love them all.
I am, of Death, a close relation,
I love a love that had lost its way,
I love to kiss and kiss the one
who goes away.

Io sono parente della Morte,
amo l’amore che svanisce,
amo baciare,
chi se ne va.
Amo le rose malate,
bramose quando sfiorite, le donne,
i lucenti, i malinconici
tempi d’autunno.
Amo delle ore tristi
lo spettrale, monitorio richiamo,
della grande Morte, della santa Morte
il sosia giocoso.
Amo chi è in partenza,
chi piange e chi si sveglia,
e nei freddi mattini brinati
i campi.
Amo la stanca rinuncia,
il pianto senza lacrime e la pace,
di saggi, poeti, malati
il rifugio.
Amo chi è deluso,
chi è invalido, chi si è fermato,
chi non crede, chi è malinconico:
il mondo.
Io sono parente della Morte,
amo l’amore che svanisce,
amo baciare,
chi se ne va.
