Don’t marvel at my sadness!
And don’t ask me about it.
I wouldn’t know how to answer you
except with vain words,
my God, so vain
that I’d break down in tears as if I were about to die.
My tears would have the air
of counting a rosary of sadness
before my soul, sorrowful seven times over.
But I wouldn’t be a poet.
I’d simply be a sweet, pensive child
who felt like praying just as he sings or sleeps.
(Transl. by Marc Alan Di Martino)
Oh, non maravigliarti della mia tristezza!
E non domandarmi;
ma io non sarei un poeta;
