The brawling of a sparrow in the eaves,
the brilliant moon and all the milky sky,
and all that famous harmony of leaves,
had blotted out man’s image and his cry.
A girl arose that had red mournful lips
and seemed the greatness of the world in tears,
doomed like Odysseus and the labouring ships
and proud as Priam murdered with his peers;
arose, and on the instant clamorous eaves,
a climbing moon upon an empty sky,
and all that lamentation of the leaves,
could but compose man’s image and his cry.
Il clamore d’un passero sulle grondaie,
la luna brillante e tutto il latteo cielo,
e tutta quella famosa armonia di foglie,
avean cancellato l’immagine dell’uomo ed il suo grido.
Una fanciulla sorse che aveva labbra rosse e dolenti
e sembrava la grandezza del mondo in lacrime,
condannata come Odisseo e le navi travagliate
e orgogliosa come Priamo assassinato con i suoi pari.
Sorse, e sull’istante le grondaie piene di clamore,
una luna che si arrampicava su un vuoto cielo,
e tutto quel lamento delle foglie,
potevano soltanto comporre
l’immagine dell’uomo ed il suo grido.
