Let the sun bring the night and the fair,
radiant moon bring on the day,
and birth, mourning, and grand pleasure, death:
let summer bring the frost
and sweet fruits, the winter,
and heaven become for us horrid hell,
or rather, hell heaven:
let nature and fate break their very laws
now that Love breaks them,
and cruelty is required for a faithful heart,
and pity for an ingrate.
(Transl. by M. Pastore Passaro)
Porti la notte il sole
e la candida luna il giorno apporte,
e ‘l nascer lutto, e gran piacer
la morte:
porti la state il gelo
e dolci frutti il verno,
e il ciel diventi a noi l’orrido
inferno,
anzi l’inferno il cielo:
rompa sue leggi la natura e ‘l fato
poi che lo rompe amore,
e premio e crudeltà d’un fedel core
e pietà d’uno ingrato.
