Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.
Fleba il fenicio,
morto da quindici giorni,
dimenticò il grido dei gabbiani,
e il flutto profondo del mare
e il guadagno e la perdita.
Una corrente sottomarina
gli spolpò le ossa in sussurri.
Mentre affiorava e affondava
traversò gli stadi della maturità
e della gioventù
entrando nei gorghi.
Gentile o giudeo
o tu che volgi la ruota
e guardi nella direzione del vento
pensa a Fleba,
che un tempo è stato bello
e ben fatto al pari di te.
