Sibilla Aleramo – Imminente Sera / Upcoming evening

Edward Burne-Jones, Night, 1870

Vast night tremble, sky high fragrance!
I hear blue stars whispering words to me,
not spoken by a human voice, but by a bright gem.
On dreamy cliffs and shady brambles
life lies silently faraway,
in so much light of heaven,
beloved light, endless fleeing life.

(Transl. by D. Foglia)

Vasto notturno palpito, alto aroma!
Odo azzurre stelle frusciarmi parole,
non d’umana voce, ma di gemma chiara.
Su trasognanti rupi e ombrati rovi
Remotissima la vita posa,
tacita, in tanto lume di cielo,
adorato lume, eterna fuggitiva vita.
