Upon the bridge the blind man stands alone,
Gray like a mist veiled monument he towers
As though of nameless realms the boundary stone
About which circle distant starry hours.

He seems the center around which stars glow
While all earth’s ostentations surge below.

Immovably and silently he stands
Placed where the confused current ebbs and flows;
Past fathomless dark depths that he commands
A shallow generation drifting goes

Il cieco che sta lì, sopra quel ponte,
come un termine grigio di regni senza nome
è forse la cosa, sempre uguale,
attorno a cui da lungi si muove l’ora fatale,
ed il silenzioso centro delle stelle,
poichè tutto attorno a lui si volge, e gronda, e brilla.

Egli è l’immobile giusto,
in cui sfociano le vie confuse: 
degli inferi l’oscura entrata
per le genti che in superficie stanno.
