Paul Verlaine – Il sole mattutino / The sweet morning sun

Follower of Leonardo da Vinci, The Virgin and Child, 1505

The sweet morning sun warms and gilds
the rye and the wheat still wet,
and the blue keeps its nightly cool.
We go out without a purpose;  we follow,
along the river among vague yellow grasses,
a grassy path flanked by old alders.
The air is alive. Sometimes a bird flies
– in its beak a hedge fruit or a blade of straw –
water reflection lasts beyond its landscape.
That’s all.
But those who dream love this landscape,
its bright sweetness which suddenly caressed
their dream of delightful happiness and cradled
the seductive memory of that girl,
as a white apparition who sings and shines,
who the poet dreams about and man has in his heart,
evoking in her vows which maybe make them smile
the companion that she has finally found
and the soul
that her soul has always cried and claimed.
