Seven hours of night, seven years of waking:
playing with axes,
you lie in the shadow of propped-up corpses
–o trees that you do not fell!,–
at your head the pageantry of the unspoken,
at your feet the beggary of words,
you lie there, playing with the axes–
and at last you are shiny like them.
Sette ore della notte, sette anni di veglia:
giocando con asce
tu giaci nell’ombra di cadaveri eretti
– oh tronchi che tu non abbatti! –
ed hai a testa lo sfarzo del
voluto silenzio,
ai piedi il ciarpame delle parole:
e giaci così e giochi con asce,
finché tu al pari di queste sfavilli.
