I feel an insurmountable fear
in the presence of mysterious heights;
I’m happy with a swallow in the heavens,
and it’s the bell tower’s flight I love!
And, it seems, old-time pedestrian
above the abyss, on boards that give,
I listen as a snowball grows
and a stone clock strikes eternity.
If only! But I am not that wayfarer,
flitting by on faded pages,
and genuinely sorrow sings within me;
truly there is an avalanche in the mountains!
And all my soul is—in bells—
but music will not save from the void!
Sento una paura invincibile
in presenza dell’altezza misteriosa;
io sono soddisfatto della rondine nei cieli
e amo il volo delle campane!
E, sembra, antico pedone,
che sopra l’abisso, sui ponti che si curvano,
ascolto come cresce una palla di neve
e l’eternità batte sulle ore di pietra.
Se così fosse! Ma io non sono
quel viandante che passa rapido
sulle foglie sbiadite
e veramente in me canta la tristezza.
In realtà, la valanga è sulle montagne!
E tutta la mia anima è nelle campane
ma la musica non salva dall’abisso!
