Oliviero Ortodeo – Dormiremo insieme / We’ll sleep together

Edward Hopper, Excursion into philosophy, 1959

We’ll sleep together
tonight,
my woman,
in great lust.
We’ll complete what we started time ago,
and never finished.
You and I in an embrace suitable
for the worst bloodline.
You and I in a martyr kiss
of the worst kind.
Will we end
or will we end to love each other?
Barefoot whores are waiting for me out there,
naked, with no clothes.
Warm excitements await
satisfaction,
under a faint moon.
Meanwhile, you enjoy
the sweetness of a hot
 summer noon,
and you strongly erupt,
as a blazing flooding river.
Only restrained
by the snow’s whiteness
of such a sudden winter
that the heat slaughters
like morning cold.

(Transl. by Dina Foglia)

Dormiremo insieme
stanotte,
donna,
entusiasti.
Finiremo ciò che da
tempo fu iniziato,
e mai concluso.
Io e te
in un abbraccio consono
alla peggiore stirpe.
Io e te in un bacio martire
della peggiore specie.
Finiremo
o finiremo d’ amarci?
Puttane scalze m’attendono,
nude e senz’ abiti,
là fuori.
Eccitazioni tiepide aspettano
d’ esser placate,
sotto una fievole luna.
E tu intanto ti godi
il piacere d’un caldo
meriggio d’estate
e forte eruppi,
ardente fiume in piena.
Frenata soltanto
dal candore della neve
di un inverno
così repentino
che il caldo sgozza
come freddo al mattino.
