Octavio Paz – Come chi ascolta piovere / As one listens to the rain

David Hockney, Rainy Night On Bridlington Promenade, 2008

Listen to me as one listens to the rain,
wet asphalt is shining,
steam rises and walks away,
night unfolds and looks at me,
you are you and your body of steam,
you and your face of night,
you and your hair, unhurried lightning,
you cross the street and enter my forehead,
footsteps of water across my eyes,
listen to me as one listens to the rain.

Ascoltami come chi ascolta piovere,
riluce l’umido asfalto,
il vapore si alza e cammina,
la notte si apre e mi guarda,
sei tu e la tua forma di vapore,
tu e il tuo volto di notte,
tu e i tuoi capelli, lampi lenti,
traversi la strada ed entri nella mia fronte,
passi d’acqua sopra le mie palpebre…
Ascoltami come chi ascolta piovere.
