Marceline Desbordes-Valmore – Saadi roses

Herbert James Draper, Pot pourri, 1897

I wanted to bring you roses this morning.
But I had closed so many in my sash,
that the knots were too tight to contain them.
The knots split. The roses blew away.
All blew off to the sea, borne by the wind,
carried to the water, never to return.
The waves looked red as if inflamed.
Tonight, my dress is still perfumed.
Breathe in the fragrant memory.

Stamattina volevo portarti delle rose
ma ne ho messe così tante nel mio corsetto
che i lacci troppo stretti non hanno potuto trattenerle.
I nastri sono saltati . Le rose sono volate via
nel vento, e sono giunte tutte al mare.
Hanno seguito la corrente per non ritornare più;
l’onda appariva rossa, come se fosse in fiamme.
Stasera il mio vestito ne conserva
ancora il profumo…
Respirane su di me l’odoroso ricordo.
