Lambros Porfiras – Non piangere / Don’t cry

John Atkinson Grimshaw, Whitby from Scotch Head, 1879

Don’t cry, don’t say that there’s nothing left for you down here.
The passing storm over the mountains is still here for you,
and the faraway dawn above the open sea, the day
in the valley, the olive trees and the noise of the city too.
You still have the humble beach downwind,
where the pier, the houses, and the old fisherman who slowly rows
fall upon rocks, at nightfall.
Don’t cry! Look, our whole life is still
over there, for you. All our life.
It lies over there in a silent and pure peacefulness,
along with its beaming and lighthearted beauty,
along with its shadow, the shadow which slowly fades away
in twilight and night breeze.

Ti resta, ancora, l’umile lido a riparo dai venti,
