Once when I walked through the fields so still,
to quit life’s turmoil, that was my will.
There stood a flower at once so near
that all my life saw I none so dear.
I would have picked it, the flower to cherish,
but then it whispered: “Let me not perish.
In earth’s deep darkness my roots are growing;
I am content here, fine blossoms showing.
I cannot serve you, I cannot woo you,
O do not pluck me, yet take me to you.”
Then as I walked through the woods so still,
I felt new striving, my life reviving, that was my will.
Andavo per i campi
così, per conto mio,
e non cercare niente
era quello che volevo.
E lì c’era un fiorellino,
subito lì, vicino,
che nella vita mai
ne vidi uno più bello.
Volevo coglierlo,
ma il fiore mi disse:
possiedo radici,
e sono ben nascoste.
Giù nel profondo
sono interrato;
per questo i miei fiori
son belli tondi.
Non so amoreggiare,
non so adulare,
non cogliermi devi,
ma trapiantare.
