Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer – Rhyme XXXVII

Frederick Leighton, Greek girls picking up pebbles by the sea, 1871

A sigh is but air, and melts into air,
a tear is but water and to the sea flows.
Tell me, woman, when love is forgot,
do you know where it goes ?

Sono aria i sospiri
 e vanno via nell’ aria.
Sono acqua le lacrime
e se ne vanno al mare.
Ma, ragazza, l’ amore
sai dirmi dove va
quando ce ne scordiamo?
