A nun takes the veil
I have desired to go
where springs not fail,
to fields where flies no sharp and sided hail
and a few lilies blow.
And I have asked to be
where no storms come,
where the green swell is in the havens dumb,
and out of the swing of the sea.
Per una suora che prende il velo
Ho voluto andare
là dove le limpide fonti non si esauriscono mai,
nei campi dove non batte la grandine
dura e irregolare
e dove, sparsi, stupendi gigli fioriscono.
E ho chiesto di vivere
dove non arrivano gli uragani,
dove il verde mare fa silenziosa marea nelle baie mute,
e il rombo dell’oceano è lontanissimo.
