What voice comes with the sound of the waves
That is not the voice of the sea?
It’s the voice of someone who speaks to us,
But that, if we listen, hushes,
For listening has occurred.

And only if, half asleep,
Without knowing we hear, we hear,
She tells us the hope,
To which, as a child who
Sleeps, sleeping we smile.

They are fortunate islands,
They are lands without whereabouts,
Where the King lives waiting.
But, if we awake,
The voice hushes, and there is only the sea.

Quale voce viene sul suono delle onde
che non è la voce del mare?
È la voce di qualcuno che ci parla,
ma che, se ascoltiamo, tace,
proprio per esserci messi ad ascoltare.

E solo se, mezzo addormentati,
udiamo senza sapere che udiamo,
essa ci parla della speranza
verso la quale, come un bambino
che dorme, dormendo sorridiamo.

Sono isole fortunate,
sono terre che non hanno luogo,
dove il re vive aspettando.
Ma, se vi andiamo destando,
tace la voce, e solo c’è il mare.
