Emily Dickinson – Io canto per riempire l’attesa / I sing to use the Waiting

Leopold von Kalckreuth, Sunday afternoon, 1893

I sing to use the Waiting
my bonnet but to tie
and shut the door unto my house
no more to do have I

till his best step approaching
we journey to the Day
and tell each other how we sung
to keep the Dark away.

Io canto per riempire l’attesa:
annodarmi la cuffia,
richiudere la porta di casa
e non ho altro da fare,

finchè risuoni vicino il suo passo,
e insieme camminiamo verso il giorno,
l’uno all’altro narrando di come cantammo
per scacciare la tenebra.
