I have nothing but despair
and a confused desire to fade:
no voice is crying out for me,
in the empty well where I crouch down.
This is death, that already locks me up.
Memory is weary. Time ago
(to whom did it belong if nothing lasts?)
I waited for you to come back
and I suffered, and I called, and you appeared,
hearty laughing at that pain of mine.

Altro non ho che la disperazione
e una confusa voglia di sparire:
nessuna voce che venga a chiamarmi
nel pozzo vuoto in cui sto rannicchiato.
E’ morte questa che già mi rinchiude.
La memoria è disfatta. Ci fu un tempo
(a chi appartenne se niente rimane?)
quando attendevo che tu ritornassi
e pativo, chiamavo, e tu apparivi
molto ridendo di quel mio penare.
