In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light
Hath left me broken-hearted.
Ah! what is not a dream by day
To him whose eyes are cast
On things around him with a ray
Turned back upon the past?
That holy dream- that holy dream,
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam
A lonely spirit guiding.
What though that light, thro’ storm and night,
So trembled from afar-
What could there be more purely bright
In Truth’s day-star?
In visioni di notturna tenebra
spesso ho sognato svanite gioie
mentre un sogno, da sveglio, di vita e di luce
m’ha lasciato col cuore implacato.
Ah, che cosa non è sogno in chiaro giorno
per colui il cui sguardo si posa
su quanto a lui è d’intorno con un raggio
che, a ritroso, si volge al tempo che non è più?
Quel sogno beato – quel sogno beato,
mentre il mondo intero m’era avverso,
m’ha rallegrato come un raggio cortese
che sa guidare un animo scontroso.
E benchè quella luce in tempestose notti
così tremolasse di lontano –
che mai può aversi di più splendente e puro
nella diurna stella del Vero?
