Edgar Allan Poe – A Dream Within A Dream

Scarsellino (1550-1620), Venus and Love

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Questo mio bacio accogli sulla fronte!
E, ora che sto per lasciarti,
lascia che te lo confessi:
non hai torto, tu, quando credi
che nient’altro che un sogno
sono stati i miei giorni;
se la speranza è fuggita
in una notte, o in un giorno,
in una visione, o nel nulla
è forse per questo meno perduta?
Tutto quel che vediamo, quel che sembriamo
è un sogno in un sogno soltanto.
Mi trovo nel frastuono di una riva
che l’onda del mare flagella,
e nella mano stringo
granelli di sabbia d’oro.
Soltanto pochi! Eppure come sfuggono
giù nel profondo attraverso le dita,
mentre io piango, e piango e piango!
O Dio! Non potrei afferrarli
con una stretta più salda?
O Dio! Non potrò salvarne
almeno uno dall’onda spietata?
Non è tutto quel che vediamo, quel che sembriamo
un sogno in un sogno soltanto?
