For healthy joy and salutary pain:

turnest to follow it.
Quel che non è e non può essere ho cercato,
per una speranza prolungata si è ammalato il cuore:
ma occorrono anni per abbandonare
una speranza di gioventù.
Aspettavo vigile e risoluta:
l’oggetto anelato sembrava fuggire,
pure di giorno in giorno,
vigile aspettavo.
A volte dicevo: tutto questo non sarà mai,
la speranza vacilla e finirà.
Ora rinuncio e troverò pace:
e non ho rinunciato mai.
A volte dicevo: quello che desidero
è un vuoto nome, perchè dare via per un nome
la pace dei miei giorni?
Pure io la davo.
Sciocca! Incapace di sana gioia
e di salutare dolore:
è una traccia vana
e ancora l’insegui.
