Charles Baudelaire – Lamenti di un Icaro / Complaint of an Icarus

Herbert James Draper, The Lament for Icarus, 1898

Those who love whores are well-endowed,
spry, and well-fed, and cheerful-spoken.
But, as for me, my arms are broken
from trying to embrace a cloud.
To what two peerless stars have done
that kindle in the farthest skies,
I owe it that my burnt-out eyes
know only memories of the sun.
In vain I’ve tried to find the pole
and the equator-line of space.
I know not by what burning gaze
the wings were molten from my soul.
By love of beauty singed, I fall
yet fail the honour and the bliss
to give my name to the abyss
which serves me for my tomb and pall.

Gli amanti delle prostitute
sono felici, in forma e sazi;
quanto a me,
ho le braccia a pezzi
a furia di afferrare nuvole.
È grazie agli incomparabili astri
che ardono nel profondo del cielo
che i miei occhi consunti
non vedono che ricordi di soli.

Vanamente ho voluto trovare
centro e fine dello spazio;
sento spezzarmisi l’ala
sotto non so che occhio di fuoco!

Arso così dall’ amore del bello,
non mi toccherà in sorte quell’ onore
sublime di poter legare il mio nome
all’abisso che mi farà da tomba.
