Catullus – Odi et amo

Sandro Botticelli, Pallas and the Centaur, c. 1482

Odi et amo. Quare id faciam, fortasse requiris.
Nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.

I hate and I love. Why I do this perhaps you ask.
I do not know, but I sense that it happens and I am tormented.

(Transl. by Leonard C. Smithers)

I hate and I love. You may well ask, why I do so.
I do not know, but I feel it and suffer.

(Transl. by C.H. Sisson)

I hate and love.
And if you ask me why,
I have no answer, but I discern,
can feel, my senses rooted in eternal torture.

(Transl. by Horace Gregory)

Odio e amo. Forse chiederai come sia possibile;
non so, ma è proprio così e mi tormento.

(Traduzione di Salvatore Quasimodo)

L’odio e l’adoro. Perché ciò faccia, se forse mi chiedi,
io, nol so: ben so tutta pena che n’ho.

(Traduzione di Giovanni Pascoli)

Odio e amo.
Come sia non so dire.
Ma tu mi vedi qui crocifisso
al mio odio ed amore.

(Traduzione di G. Ceronetti)
