Bertolt Brecht – Mi fai spuntare le lacrime, fratello / Brother, you make my eyes wet

John Everett Millais, The Woodman's Daughter, 1851

Brother, you make my eyes wet,
I see your life is no fun.
Here is an apple. See, I have three,
so I can give you one.
I see nothing excessive about it:
we can both live.
Only promise me, that you in your greed
 will not swallow the seeds,
rather that you, before I depart,
will spit the seeds on the ground before.
And should it become an apple tree
in the middle of your field
then come and pick the apples
from the tree that you have planted!

Mi fai spuntar le lacrime, fratello,
vedo che la vita non è allegra
ecco una mela: io ne possiedo tre,
perciò una la regalo a te.
Non ci vedo niente di eccezionale:
e l’uno e l’altro possiamo vivere.
Solo i semi, promettimelo,
avido non inghiottirli,
sputali invece a terra
prima che mi allontani.
E se poi cresce un melo
dentro il mio campicello
vieni a prenderti i frutti:
è il tuo albero quello!
