Black threads of poplars –
black threads of clouds
on the red sky –
and this first grass
free from snow
so clear
that it makes you think of spring
and look to see
if at a curve
the primroses blossom –
But ice azures the paths –
fog sends ditches to sleep –
a slow pallor wrecks
the sky’s colours –
Night’s falling –
no flower has bloomed –
it’s winter – soul –
it is winter.
(Transl. by Peter Robinson)
Fili neri di pioppi –
fili neri di nubi
sul cielo rosso –
e questa prima erba
libera dalla neve
chiara
che fa pensare alla primavera
e guardare
se ad una svolta
nascono le primule.
Ma il ghiaccio inazzurra i sentieri –
la nebbia addormenta i fossati –
un lento pallore devasta
i dolori del cielo.
Scende la notte –
nessun fiore è nato –
è inverno – anima –
è inverno.
