Alda Merini – Laggiù dove morivano i dannati / Down there where the damned died

Cornelis van Harleem, Fall of the titans, 1588

Down there where the damned died
in decadent and crazy hell
of the boundless asylum,
where numb appendages
wrapped themselves in linens
as in a Semitic burial cloth,
down there where the shadows of death
licked your bare feet
as they stuck out from beneath the sheets,
and the torrid wraps
cut into your wrists and hands,
and you smelled of feces,
down there, in the asylum
it was easy metaphorically
to touch paradise.
You did so with a burning mind,
with hands soft from sweat,
with your cock standing upright
as an obscenity for God,
down there in the asylum
where the screams were attenuated
by bloody pillows
down there you saw God
I don’t know, among the transparent ideas
of your great madness.
God appeared before you
and your body broke up,
into blond and scented pieces
that descended to devastate
sudden swarms of swallows.

Laggiù dove morivano i dannati
nell’inferno decadente e folle
nel manicomio infinito
dove le membra intorpidite
si avvoltolavano nei lini
come in un sudario semita
laggiù dove le ombre del trapasso
ti lambivano i piedi nudi
col pene alzato nell’aria
come una sconcezza per Dio.
Laggiù nel manicomio
dove le urla venivano attutite
da sanguinari cuscini
laggiù tu vedevi Iddio
non so, tra le traslucide idee
della tua grande follia.
Iddio ti compariva
e il tuo corpo andava in briciole
delle briciole bionde e odorose
che scendevano a devastare
sciami di rondini improvvise.
