The gods’ vengeance does exist. Blessed is anyone
who blinds off the day’s weft without weeping.
I thought, I sing Agido’s light. I look
upon her as upon the sun, which Agido invokes
to shine for us as a witness. Our celebrated chorus
leader prevent me from either praising or blaming
Agido, for her mere appearance distinguishes
her, as if someone should put a horse
in the middle of a cattle herd, a powerful,
prize-winning horse with thundering hooves,
one of those horses that belongs in cavernous dreams.
Or do you not see? The race-horse is Enetic,
but my cousin Hagesichora’s hair luminesces
like unalloyed gold.

C’è un castigo che viene dagli dei.
Felice chi é sereno
e trascorre il suo giorno
senza pianto. Ora io canto
la luce di Agido. La scorgo come
un sole, e così a noi Agido rivela
il suo splendore. Io non lodo o rimprovero
la famosa corifea
in alcun modo. Essa spicca
come, in mezzo all’armento
che pascola, un cavallo
dal piede sonante, uso a vincere,
veloce più dei sogni, nelle gare.
Non la vedi? É come cavallo
veneto. Ma anche la chioma disciolta
della compagna Agesicora
ha riflessi d’oro limpido.
