Alcaeus of Mytilene (also spelled Alkaios; Alceo in Italian) was a lyric poet from the Greek island of Lesbos whose work was highly esteemed in the ancient world. He is the father of the Alcaic stanza and was included in the canonical list of nine lyric poets by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria. He was a contemporary and an alleged lover of Sappho.
